Gynaecological/Pelvic Scan

When facing problems like abdominal pain or irregular periods, our Cambridge Park pelvic scan becomes an essential tool. This ultrasound peers into your uterus and ovaries, often helping doctors in their diagnosis. This can be done either through taking images through your stomach, but in sexually active women, a transvaginal scan can be done to get a high quality image.

A Cambridge Park transvaginal scan involves placing a sterilised ultrasound probe, covered in a disposable sheath inside the vagina. If the lining cannot be seen in the transvaginal scan, then a saline sonogram (sonohysterogram) may be used.

ESSENTIALS BEFORE YOUR APPOINTMENT

Before your pelvic scan in Cambridge Park:

  • It’s ideal to schedule your scan during the first part of your menstrual cycle.
  • There’s no need to drink large quantities of water beforehand.
  • The transvaginal scan will be avoided if you’re not sexually active or if it’s specifically requested by your doctor.
  • For those wanting a female practitioner, please mention this during your booking.
Sonohysterogram

Sonohysterogram

In cases where more detailed imaging is required, our Cambridge Park clinic uses the sonohysterogram. A procedure somewhat akin to a pap smear, it involves introducing saline into the cervix to spot potential fibroids or polyps. It may also help to identify any unusual womb shapes that may increase the risk of pregnancy complications and miscarriages in the future.

Tubal Patency Scan

If a woman is having problems falling pregnant, a tubal patency scan is used in combination with an ovulation test and a sperm analysis can be done to determine what the causes of infertility are, if any.

Similar to a pap smear, a fine plastic tube is passed through the cervix and scanned with a sterile probe covered in a disposable sheath. After a fluid solution is injected through the plastic tube, the doctor will then monitor the fluid in the ultrasound to see if there are any blockages.

WHAT YOU SHOULD REMEMBER BEFORE YOUR APPOINTMENT

For your Tubal Patency Scan in Cambridge Park:

  • Consider arranging support or taking the day off as some discomfort might occur.
  • To alleviate possible period-like pains, consider taking Naprogesic or Ponstan tablets about an hour prior.
  • Ideally, this test should be scheduled within a week post your period.
Ovarian Cancer Screening

Ovarian Cancer Screening

Ovarian cancer and endometriosis are significant concerns in women’s health. It is particularly beneficial for women over 50 with a family history of ovarian or breast cancer. Our screenings, coupled with transvaguinal ultrasound, blood tests, and doctor’s clinical assessment, aid in early detection and management.

Endometriosis Screening

Endometriosis affects 1 in 10 young women and is caused by the growth of endometrial glands outside of the womb, usually on or in ovaries, the back of the uterus on the pelvic walls and on the bowel. A Cambridge Park endometriosis screening can help see the endometriotic cysts in the ovaries or look for deep infiltrative endometriosis.

Mirena IUCD

Beyond disease management, we also assist with family planning. A Mirena IUCD is a contraceptive device that has a slow-release form of the progesterone hormone. It causes a thinning of the lining in the womb, reducing the number of periods and making it difficult to fall pregnant. One of our Mirena IUCD Cambridge Park Specialists is able to perform the procedure or replace your current Mirena IUCD.
